WoW Midnight Season 2 Prep: Venomous Abyss Bosses, Unlock Dates, and the M+ Pool

Season 2 opens August 18 with an eight-boss raid, an eight-dungeon Mythic+ pool, and a Lair, all on the same reset. Every date, every boss in the order you will meet them, the affix ladder, the item levels, and the one habit that gets you through week 1 faster than any cheat sheet.

Coach Clutch

Your savage AI coach

Midnight Season 2 starts with the weekly reset on August 18 (August 19 in Europe), and unlike Season 1 there is no staggered Mythic week. Normal, Heroic, and Mythic Venomous Abyss all open the same day. The Mythic+ season opens the same day. The Tidebound Grotto Lair gets its Normal, Heroic, and Mythic difficulties the same day. One Tuesday, everything.

If you raid or push keys, here is what you need before then: the full schedule, all eight bosses in the order you will meet them, the dungeon pool and timers, the affix ladder, the item levels, and how to get through week 1 without memorizing a single cheat sheet.

Two Tuesdays, Not One

Patch 12.1, Curse of Ula'tek, went live on August 11. That was the class-changes-and-new-zone week: the Coiled Isle, Altar of Fangs on Heroic and Mythic 0, and the Tidebound Grotto on World difficulty. Mythic 0 ran on a weekly lockout.

August 18 is the season. Here is what flips:

  • The Venomous Abyss opens on Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and Raid Finder Wing 1.
  • Mythic+ Season 2 begins with the eight-dungeon pool below.
  • Mythic 0 switches to a daily lockout (still 292 item level, Champion track).
  • Tidebound Grotto adds Normal, Heroic, and flexible-scaling Mythic.

If you spent last week leveling and the patch felt quiet, that is why. The real Day 0 is this one.

The Venomous Abyss: Eight Bosses, One Serpent

The raid sits inside the Vaults of Atal'Utek on the Coiled Isle. Level 90, five difficulties (Story Mode, Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic, Mythic), and a Raid Finder minimum of 273 item level, higher than most people expect coming out of Season 1. If you have not been running Heroic dungeons or Mythic 0 this week, that number is your first job.

The story hook: Zul'jan's ritual freed the broods of Ula'tek, the venom-serpent the Amani built the whole complex to imprison. You go down there and put it back.

The Layout

The raid is not a straight line. Per Wowhead's overview, you kill the first boss, clear two wings of two bosses each in whichever order you like, then come back to the central pit for the sixth boss and push through the last two:

  1. Nek'zali the Soulcoiler
  2. Wing one: Entombed Sentinels, then Vashnik the Malignant
  3. Wing two: The Lost Explorers, then Sszorak
  4. Back to the pit: The Twin Fangs
  5. The Coiled Altar
  6. Ula'tek

Raid Finder does not follow that path. Its wings pair Nek'zali with The Twin Fangs in Wing 1, so LFR players meet the sixth organized-raid boss on day one.

Every Boss

1. Nek'zali the Soulcoiler. The shadow hunter who summoned Ula'tek in the first place and was entombed for it. The PTR guides agree on the shape: two phases with an intermission, and the whole fight is about the Soulcoil Well in the middle of the room. Adds climb out of sarcophagi and walk toward it; anything that reaches it feeds Nek'zali energy and hits the raid. At half health she retreats and you have to break the ritual to bring her back; at full energy she goes into a rage and you either finish her or you don't. Add priority beats boss uptime here, which is going to be a rude surprise for a lot of DPS.

2. Entombed Sentinels. The Blood and Breath of Ula'tek: ancient vault golems, corrupted by venom, standing between you and Vashnik. First boss of the first wing.

3. Vashnik the Malignant. Distills Ula'tek's venom into nastier and nastier forms inside the Chamber of Virulence. If the name did not give it away, plan your healer cooldowns.

4. The Lost Explorers. A band of tortollan possessed by spirits, coming to their senses near an ancient Soulcoiler's sarcophagus. First boss of the second wing.

5. Sszorak. A creature warped by Ula'tek's venom into, in Blizzard's words, "a brutal instrument of vengeance." Second boss of the second wing.

6. The Twin Fangs. Vexhul and Ithraz, the first of Ula'tek's blood, brooding under a sea of venom deep in the vault. Two of them. Bring the fight back to the pit.

7. The Coiled Altar. The spirit of Malacrass will not let go of Zul'jan. "The shaman commands the warrior." The story's central betrayal, played out as an encounter.

8. Ula'tek. The great shame of the Amani, the weapon the entire Atal'Utek complex was built to hold. Ahead of the Curve on Heroic, Cutting Edge on Mythic, the Primeval Skyfriend mount from the Mythic kill, and a Hall of Fame title (Famed Slayer of Ula'tek) for the first 200 guilds.

Everything above is what Blizzard and the PTR have said. Live tuning is a different animal, and no cheat sheet survives first contact with the real fight. That is not a warning. It is the point of the next section.

The Unlock Schedule

Week ofWhat opens
August 18Normal, Heroic, and Mythic. Raid Finder Wing 1: Nek'zali the Soulcoiler, The Twin Fangs.
August 25Story Mode. Raid Finder Wing 2: Entombed Sentinels, Vashnik the Malignant.
September 1Raid Finder Wing 3: The Lost Explorers, Sszorak.
September 8Raid Finder Wing 4: The Coiled Altar, Ula'tek.

The big difference from Season 1: Mythic opens in week 1, not week 2. There is no Heroic-only warm-up week for the top guilds, and the Race to World First starts on day one.

Raid Loot

Item level climbs by boss position, not just difficulty. Roughly: Raid Finder 279 to 289, Normal 292 to 302, Heroic 305 to 315, Mythic 318 on the first boss and climbing from there, with the last two Mythic bosses dropping higher still. Every boss also drops Mistcrests, the Season 2 upgrade currency, at the tier matching the difficulty.

Mythic+ Season 2: The Eight-Dungeon Pool

Five Midnight dungeons and three returning ones:

Midnight:

  • Altar of Fangs (new in 12.1)
  • Murder Row
  • Den of Nalorakk
  • The Blinding Vale
  • Voidscar Arena

Returning:

  • Kings' Rest (Battle for Azeroth)
  • Temple of Sethraliss (Battle for Azeroth)
  • Ruby Life Pools (Dragonflight)

Two of the eight are three-boss dungeons: the new Altar of Fangs (Rav'i, The Writhing Coil, Zul'jan) and Ruby Life Pools. Fewer bosses to bank progress against means trash carries more of the clock in those two than anywhere else this season. Route and pull size decide those keys more than boss execution does.

Timers

From Wowhead's Season 2 overview, based on the PTR and subject to change at launch:

What Blizzard Changed for Season 2

Four things worth knowing before your first key:

  • Bigger creature health pools. The stated goal is more emphasis on target priority and damage checks, and less immediate pressure on tanks and healers. Translation: DPS, your kill order matters more this season, and "we wiped because the healer fell behind" is going to be the wrong diagnosis more often than it used to be.
  • Updated precast visuals for cone and line abilities, matching the swirly rework from The War Within. Fewer "I didn't see it" deaths, in theory.
  • Dungeon pain points addressed: faster roleplay events, some boss reworks.
  • Enemy tooltips show their Enemy Forces contribution. No more guessing which pack is worth pulling.

The Affix Ladder

Same shape as Season 1:

Key levelWhat changes
+2Lindormi's Guidance turns on: highlighted enemies have 5% less health, deal 5% less damage, and deaths do not cost timer.
+5Xal'atath's Bargain starts rotating weekly (Ascendant, Voidbound, Pulsar, Devour).
+6Lindormi's Guidance turns off.
+7Fortified or Tyrannical, alternating weekly.
+10Both Fortified and Tyrannical, every week.
+12Xal'atath's Guile replaces the Bargain affix.

Time every dungeon at +12 or higher and you earn the Resilient Keystone achievement: your key never drops below 12 again when you brick it. Same deal at 13, 14, and up.

Item Levels and Rewards

Mythic 0 drops 292 (Champion track) on a daily lockout. Keys:

Key levelEnd of dungeonGreat Vault

+4298308
+5302308
+6305311
+7305315
+8 to +9308315
+10 and up311318

Ratings: 2000 for Keystone Master and the Breath of Blight mount, 3000 for Keystone Legend and Breath of Ruin. Dungeon teleports unlock at +10 per dungeon.

The Tidebound Grotto: What a Lair Is

New in 12.1: a Lair is an instanced world boss you can queue for solo or bring a premade to, and it scales to the group. The Tidebound Grotto is underwater on the Coiled Isle (swim down; bring an aquatic mount), and the boss is Nymrissa Wavecaller.

World difficulty has been open since August 11 (279 gear, scales 5 to 40 players). August 18 adds Normal (292), Heroic (305), and flexible-scaling Mythic (318, 15 to 25 players). It is one boss, it is quick, and the Normal and Heroic drops are the same item level as the raid's first bosses. Do it.

What Season 2 Does to Your Logs

Here is the thing nobody says out loud about a new season: everyone starts at zero. Eight bosses nobody has killed on live. Eight dungeons with new health pools and reworked bosses. The guides are built on PTR data that may not match live tuning. Your raid is going to pull Nek'zali on Tuesday and find out whether the add-priority plan survives contact.

When it doesn't, you have two options.

Option A: alt-tab, read a guide, watch a video, argue about who was supposed to be on adds for five minutes, pull again, wipe to something different, repeat.

Option B: read the pull. Not the boss. Your pull.

Upload the log to WowCoach and ask what happened. You get it back with timestamps and ability names, pulled from your log, not made up:

  • Who died first, and to what. The death recap shows the last ten seconds, which defensives were sitting unused, and whether it was a missed swap, a healer gap, or unhandled boss damage.
  • What is costing the most pulls. Wipe analysis ranks the problems across your night by how many pulls each one ate and leads with the biggest one. On a fight like Nek'zali, that is going to be about the well more often than not.
  • Who missed the kick. Every interrupt and every one that got through, player by player. With Season 2's bigger health pools, kicks and kill order decide more keys than healer throughput does.
  • Whether last pull's lesson stuck. Pull comparison, so "we fixed that" is a fact and not a feeling.
Week 1 progression

Wiped on a boss nobody has killed yet? Read the pull.

Upload the log and ask what happened. Who died first and to what, which defensives sat unused, who missed the kick. Timestamps and ability names, pulled from your log.

Coach Clutch says: "You have never seen this boss. Neither has anyone else on August 18. What I care about is that you wiped at 41% because two adds walked into the well while your top three DPS were tunneling the boss. I know that because it is in the log. Pull again. Adds first."

For M+ the same idea applies with a different accent. Bigger health pools mean the damage check is real, so the questions that matter are boss versus trash damage, deaths per pull, and how much of the timer went to a single bad pack. Ask those after the key instead of guessing at them in the parking lot.

And if you have the Desktop App, you do not even upload. It watches the log while you play, uploads when the pull ends, and has the read waiting for you before the raid leader has finished typing "what happened."

Your Week 1 Checklist

Before August 18:

  • Get to 273 item level so Raid Finder is at least an option (Heroic dungeons, Mythic 0, the Tidebound Grotto on World).
  • Turn logging on: /combatlog before the pull, or an auto-logger addon. Season 2 pulls you do not log are pulls you cannot review.
  • Install the Desktop App so uploads happen while you play.
  • Skim the boss list above. Do not memorize mechanics; know the names and the layout so callouts are not gibberish.
  • Decide who is on adds for Nek'zali before you zone in. That one assignment is going to decide more week 1 pulls than any other.

Week of August 18:

  • Clear Normal for the gear pass. Start Heroic. That is where the learning is.
  • Do the Tidebound Grotto on Normal and Heroic. One boss, raid-quality loot.
  • Log every prog night and read the wipes the same night, while they still sting.
  • Run a ten-minute review the next morning. One fix per week compounds.
  • Get your first keys in. Mythic 0 is daily now, so gearing alts and offspecs is faster than it was.

Week of August 25:

  • Story Mode and Raid Finder Wing 2 open. LFR is fine to log; the wipes are just as instructive.

September 1 and 8:

  • Raid Finder Wings 3 and 4. By then your Heroic team should be past the wings and staring at The Twin Fangs. Bring your logs.

The Bottom Line

Season 2 is a hard reset with no runway. Eight bosses and Mythic on the same day, an eight-dungeon pool built around a three-boss dungeon, and tuning that shifts the pressure from healers to DPS. The team that learns fastest from its own wipes progresses fastest, and this season that team has no week-two head start to lean on.

You do not need every mechanic memorized before Tuesday. You need to know what went wrong on the last pull before the next one starts.

Upload your first Venomous Abyss log and ask what killed you.

Stay clutch.
